Our studio computer can fix anything: a late snare, a flat note, a whole chorus in the wrong key. That is exactly why the first version of every Cadencebay song is recorded on a thirty-year-old four-track that can fix nothing.
Four tracks, no hiding
Tape gives you four tracks and one chance. You play the song the way you would play it for a friend — all the way through, breathing in the right places — because stopping means rewinding, and rewinding means everyone hears the mistake twice.
Most Midnight Static songs survived from those tapes almost unchanged. The wobble in the “Paper Skies” guitar is a cassette artifact we chose not to re-record. It sounded like the room we wrote it in.
Hear the difference yourself
The Unreleased Sessions cassette in our shop is dubbed from those original four-tracks — hiss, talkback and all, limited to 300 copies. When they are gone, the demos go back in the drawer.
